Trace Analysis of Seawater

Spring semesters

A course designed for students who are ready to conduct research projects involving trace analysis of seawater and/or marine sediment/particles.

Subjects to be covered: Basic laboratory skills, Investigative approach for sample preparation, Lab 1: Pre-concentration techniques, Lab 2: Methods for sediment digestion and partial extraction, Lab 3: Trace metal determination, Sampling, Sample treatments, Sample preparation for inorganic analysis, Sample preparation for organic analysis, Instrumental techniques for trace analysis, Lab result presentation, Specific techniques in sampling of seawater, Modern methods in trace analysis of seawater.

Ocean Observation and Investigation

Fall semesters

For students to gain broad knowledge on observational techniques, instruments, and methods, and attempt to link techniques with scientific planning for project investigation.

Historical oceanography, Overview of oceanography, Basic oceanic parameters, Navigation, Research vessels, Ocean observation cruises, Map making, Observation tools, Marine observatory techniques, Modern oceanographic instruments, Remote sensing, Oceanic properties, Spatial and temporal consideration, Estuarine/costal studies, Oceanic studies, Project Presentation.
